Walter Edward Bauman, 93, of Luverne, MN, formerly of Jasper, MN passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Luverne.
Memorial services will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in the Jasper Cemetery.
Walt was born to John and Edna (Schlapkohl) Bauman April 24, 1924 on a farm north of Jasper, MN. He attended country school in District #26 and attended high school in Jasper. In January 1945, Walt enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the Army PX in the Philippines. After his discharge from the service as a sergeant on November 29, 1946, he returned to Jasper. On December 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to Bette Monger at Highland Lutheran Church in rural Sherman, SD. Following their marriage they resided near Jasper and Walt worked for Gewecke Dairy. In April 1947, he went to work for a farm in the Jasper area and was later employed by the International Harvester Company in Jasper. He bought a corn sheller in 1948 and did custom shelling and baling for ten years. Two years later, he began working at Steinberg Texaco in Jasper. Then, in 1950, Walt went into farming on his own and farmed several places near Jasper until 1973 when he and Bette moved to Garretson, SD where they purchased B’s Place. They remodeled the facility and renamed it Walt’s Place. Walt retired in 1988 and in 2003, he and Bette moved back to Jasper. In 2015 Walt moved to the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Luverne.
Walt was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper and was a member at the time of his death. He was also a member of the Garretson and Jasper American Legions. He joined 4-H in 1933, and during the years he showed champion Shorthorn and Angus steers at Pipestone, South St. Paul and Sioux City. While farming he raised Shorthorn cattle and Chester White hogs and showed them. When his children were in 4-H, he was a part-time leader and the manager of the 4-H softball team. He enjoyed fishing, especially at the Ihlen Dam, Garretson Split Rock Creek, Missouri River in South Dakota as well as Green and Diamond Lakes in Minnesota. He looked forward to the annual Bauman men’s fishing trip which included his brothers, brothers-in-law, sons and nephews.
Walt is lovingly remembered by his wife, Bette Bauman of Jasper; three children, Linda (Jerry) Tower of Jasper, Brian (Judy) Bauman of Sioux Falls and Nancy Karl of Inver Grove Heights, MN; six grandchildren, Tammy (Brent) DeCroock of Farmington, MN, Lisa (Monte) Stengel of Brandon, SD, Chad (Nancee) Tower of Shawnee, KS, Scott Bauman of Sioux Falls, Brett (Jessica) Bauman of St. Louis Park, MN and Jessica Karl of Inver Grove Heights, MN; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Alvin (Marlene) Bauman of Jasper and sister, Marge Braken of Redwood Falls, MN. He was preceded in death by his son, Edward Bauman; parents; brother, Gordon Bauman and sister, Lavon Michaelson.
