Sandy was born on September 22, 1955 to Oliver and Delores (Thompson) Hayes in Webster, South Dakota. Her family moved to Watertown, South Dakota in 1957 and she graduated from Watertown High School in 1973.  Sandy married Henry Alexander Haan, Jr (Al) on April 26, 1975 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kranzburg, South Dakota.  After Al’s passing in 1986, Sandy worked at Terrace Manor Nursing Home in Dell Rapids while attending Southeast Technical Institute for surgical technology in Sioux Falls.  She graduated at the top of her class 1991 while raising four kids.  Shortly after graduation she accepted a position as a certified surgical technologist in Labor & Delivery at Sioux Valley Hospital (now Sanford Hospital).  Sandy worked there for nearly 30 years, made many friends, and helped deliver countless babies into the world.

Sandy enjoyed listening to music, attending concerts, traveling, shopping, and enjoying the outdoors, especially when the weather was warm and sunny.  Most of all, Sandy enjoyed spending time with her family and loved spoiling her three grandchildren.  She loved the holidays, which brought her family together.  She would also go to great lengths to decorate her house throughout the year.  She loved many animals but especially her beloved dog, Macy May.

Survivors include her children: Alex Haan, Jason (Missy McCauley) Haan, Damon (Jennie) Haan, and Meagan (Ryan) Goens; grandchildren: Lexi (Vincent Gouthreaux) Haan, AJ (Merrissa) Haan, and Marissa Haan; brother: Fred Hayes, and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Al Haan, parents Oliver and Delores Hayes, and brother Rev. Michael Hayes.

Sandy’s family would like to express a special thank you to “Sandy’s Supporters”, co-workers who rallied in support of her fight with breast cancer.
