Pearl Lorraine Stoterau was born May 4, 1921 at home in Sherman, SD. She died February 23, 2018, at Palisade Healthcare in Garretson surrounded by her family. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at Highland Lutheran Church, rural Sherman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Tuesday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Garretson Senior Citizens or Highland Lutheran Church.
Pearl attended grade school at District 45 Highland. She graduated from Sherman High School in 1939. After high school she attended Augustana College, where she obtained her teaching degree in 1941. She taught school in Rock County, Minnesota and Minnehaha County, SD. On August 18, 1946, she married Merle Stoterau at Highland Lutheran Church, rural Sherman. After marriage, Pearl became a farm wife, raising their six children. She later worked Palisade Manor.
Pearl was a member of Highland Church WELCA and Garretson Senior Citizens. She was strong in her faith. She loved her Church and Church family. She delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her family. She has attended countless ball games for her kids and grandkids. She even traveled to Portland, OR for grandkids’ football and basketball games! She was competitive and enjoyed playing (winning) cards and games – especially Scrabble. She had a passion for reading, loved watching the Minnesota Twins, traveling and dancing. Her background in English made her an expert at crossword puzzles and the champion of Scrabble.
Survivors include her children: Jeffrey (Peggy) Stoterau, Sioux Falls, Patti (Mike) Fresvik, Portland, OR, David (Mary) Stoterau, Sioux Falls, Terry (Marge) Stoterau, Sherman, and Laurie (Bruce) Bruggeman, Garretson.
13 grandchildren: Scott (Cheryl) Fresvik, Kim (John) Massey, Aaron Stoterau, Betsy (Joe) Weber, Michele (Doug) Fresvik-Komoroski, Sally (Kelly) Flemming, Tracy (Matt) Hansen, Tyler Bruggeman, Andy (Amanda) Stoterau, Stacy (Josh) Eden, Brad Bruggeman, Britney Bruggeman, Chad Stoterau.
17 great grandchildren: Nicole (Jared) Questad, Sarah, Abigail and Madison Fresvik, Mack Massey, Kylie Stoterau, Halle and Hayden Weber, Kalli (Fresvik) Gallagher and Easton Komoroski, Max and Macy Flemming, Christian and Avery Hansen, Briely, Raelynn and Hensely Eden. Pearl’s first great-great grandchild is due in March.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merle; son, Lynn; and a sister, Doris Koch.
