Ordell A. Winterton, age 93, of Sherman, passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM Monday, April 30, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Interment will be in the South Highland Cemetery, rural Sherman. Visitation will be from 4-6:00 PM Sunday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson, and one hour prior to the service on Monday.
Ordell was born on February 17, 1925 near Sherman to Odde “Ed” and Bertha (Tungesvik) Winterton and was baptized at the South Highland Lutheran Church. He attended District 37 country school and graduated in 1942 from Sherman High School. In 1943, Ordell volunteered for induction in the US Army at the age of 17. He served in the European Theater with the 99 th Infantry Division. They crossed through Belgium and advanced through Germany. After their regiment was sent to join General Patton’s 3 rd Army, Ordell was wounded while crossing the Danube River. He received the Purple Heart and was honorably discharged in 1946. After returning to Sherman he attended Augustana College for one year and then began farming. Farming was his passion and he was still combining crops during harvest this past fall.
On May 2, 1948, Ordell married Madeline Krogstad at the Willow Creek Lutheran Church near Dell Rapids. They purchased the Sande farm in 1951 northwest of Sherman and farmed in the area all their lives. Madeline died on September 26, 2014.
Ordell was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Sherman where he taught Sunday School, served on the church council, and sang in the choir. He was also a member of the Garretson American Legion, Sioux Valley Milk Producers, and Farm Bureau. He served on the Garretson School Board and sang in the Norse Glee Club. More recently he enjoyed hunting and fishing with the friends he made with the Warriors Never Give Up organization. He enjoyed bowling, reading, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his children: Alice (Ray) Christensen, Sioux Falls, Beverly (Stuart) Nelson, Fountain, MN, Marilyn (Marcus) Anderson, Clearwater, MN, Gloria Winterton, Lake Norden, Darrell (Teresa) Winterton, Garretson, Kristi (Scott) Hansen, Rochester, MN, Alan (LaDonna) Winterton, Sherman; nineteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; his sisters, Betty Johnson, Sioux Falls, Doris (Ordell) Krogstad, Baltic, and Janet (Mike) Marsh, Leawood, KS; brothers: Kenneth (Beverly) Winterton, Madison, and Merlyn Winterton, Colorado Springs, CO; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline in 2014; and his brother, Gordon.
