Merlyn Skorr, age 75, of Garretson, passed away on Monday, July 23, 2018, in Garretson.
Funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Alf (Merlyn) Skorr was born on October 27, 1942 to Alf and Margaret Skorr in Luverne, Minnesota. He grew up in rural Jasper, Minnesota where he attended country school until the 8 th grade, he then attended and graduated from Jasper High School in 1960. On August 13 th , 1961 he married Geneva Hartman in Garretson, SD in an outside ceremony on the Hartman Farm. Merlyn and Geneva started their life together in rural Garretson from 1961-1969, when they then bought an acreage by Sherman, SD in 1969, where they raised their three children: Dawn Marie, Scott Merle and Laura Kay. He worked fulltime at John Morrell and Company in Sioux Falls, South Dakota from 1962 through 1974, while also farming part-time and feeding cattle. Merlyn began farming fulltime in 1974 and continued for 46 years until he retired in 2007.
Merlyn was a Mason and Church Deacon, served on the Township board, belonged to the American Ag Movement and a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Merlyn had a deep love of farming up until the very end. His passion was displayed in his sunrise to sunset work days 7 days a week during planting and harvesting time. He instilled a strong work ethic in his children which remains in each of them to this day. He loved attending his grandchildren’s events any chance he could, up until he no longer was able due to health issues. During his retirement years, he and his wife Geneva enjoyed traveling as much as possible and riding their Harleys. Sunday afternoon rides in the country side, with stops to see their kids were cherished.
Merlyn is survived by his wife, Geneva, of Garretson; children: Dawn (Marlyn) Conrad, Garretson, Scott, Montana and Laura (Tim) Mullin, Garretson; seven grandchildren, Sarah Conrad, Watford City, ND, Ryan Conrad, Sioux Falls, SD ,Megan Skorr, Hartford, SD, Nathan Skorr, Sioux Falls, SD and Erin Skorr, Sioux Falls, SD Olivia Mullin, Kloey Mullin Garretson; 2 sisters; Carol Skorr, Mankato, MN, Shirley Piepho Mankato, MN; 2 brothers; Arlen, Mankato, MN, Kenny, Pipestone, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alf and Margaret Skorr; Sister Karen Ann and Brother Kermit Skorr.
