Maxine Joyce Mannion

January 30, 1933 — January 14, 2022

Maxine Mannion, age 88, of Sioux Falls, passed away on Friday, January 14, 2022, at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls. Memorial services will begin at 1:30 PM Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at Willow Creek Lutheran Church, rural Dell Rapids. Visitation with family present will be from 5-7:00 PM Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Willow Creek Cemetery Fund.

Maxine was born on January 30, 1933, at Menno, South Dakota, to Melvin I. and Jeannette (Gran) Berg. When her mother died when she was three weeks old, Maxine was raised by her father’s sister and her husband, Clara and Alfred Dybedahl of rural Dell Rapids. She graduated from Baltic High School in 1950 and from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion in 1952, with a Certificate in Secretarial Science.

On April 7, 1955, Maxine married William K. Mannion of Sioux Falls at Willow Creek Lutheran Church. Maxine lived in Aberdeen, SD from 1957-1975, where she worked for Indian Health Services. She then lived in Lakewood, CO from 1975 to 2005, where she retired from the National Mapping Division of the United States Geological Survey in June of 1993. She moved to Rapid City in 2005 and finally settled in Sioux Fall in December of 2010.

Maxine is survived by her children: Shirley (Jerry) Callahan, Nancy (Don) Born, and Steven (Gloria) Mannion; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; all of Colorado; and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Berg, of Brandon, SD; brother-in-law, Edmund Mannion, of Chico, CA; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; son, David; birth parents, Melvin and Jeannette Berg; parents, Clara and Alfred Dybedahl; infant sister and brother, Iola and David Dybedahl; brother, Irwin Berg; sister and brother-in-law, Murlene and Kenneth Collins; brother and sister-in-law, Navis and Melva Dybedahl; sisters-in-law, Shirley Mannion and Phyllis Mannion; brother-in-law, Bud Mannion; and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Lucy Mannion.
