Marvin Swenson

Marvin Swenson, age 84 of Sherman, SD passed away Saturday, September 4, 2021, at the Pipestone Hospice House in Pipestone, MN.

A Memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, September 10, 2021, at Highland Lutheran Church near Sherman, SD with Rev. Sue Grinde officiating.  Inurnment will follow at Highland Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will take place Thursday, September 9 ^th from 5 -7 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home in Garretson, SD.

Memorials may be made in Marvin's name to the Highland Lutheran Church.

Marvin Swenson was born May 10, 1937 at his family farmstead near Sherman, SD to John and Genevieve (Sigdestad) Swenson.  He graduated from Jasper High School in 1955.  On June 9 ^th , 1960 he was united in marriage to Charlotte Basche.  The couple were blessed with four children.  They raised their family on the farm worked side by side until their retirement.  Charlotte passed away in 2010.

Marvin enlisted in the Army Reserves and served from 1960 to 1966.  His sharpshooter skills brought him to many shooting tournaments. He had a lifelong love for shooting and collecting guns with his sons. Marvin’s church was very important to him.  He was baptized, confirmed, and married at Highland Lutheran Church.  He enjoyed gardening and always had a wonderfully large harvest.  He gave most of his produce away.  He had a big heart and when asked about his produce giving, he would say, “There’s big money in giving it away”.  Marvin was a trucker for many years and enjoyed seeing the nation. He also loved to fish for Catfish and had many fishing buddies. In his later years he liked to reminisce of his adventures over a cold one. Marvin had a great sense of humor and was known for a practical joke or two.

Marvin’s pride and joy was his grandchildren.  He loved spending time with all of them. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting and gardening with them and passing on bits of wisdom or tall tales as family called Marvinism’s. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his children, Kevin (Cheryl) Swenson of Sherman, SD, Jonathan Swenson of Sherman, SD, and Michele (David) Jones of Pipestone, MN, daughter-in-law, Lisa Swenson, Sioux Falls, SD; sister Mary Ann Swenson, Sioux Falls, SD; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Charlotte; son, Mark; great-granddaughter Ensley; brothers, Johan and Edward; sisters, Pearl and Evangeline.
