Anna Lorraine was born on July 4, 1926, in Edmunds, North Dakota, to Azel and Anna (Mehring) Peterson. The family moved to South Dakota in 1937. They lived in the Colman and Wentworth area until 1941 when they purchased a farm south of Fedora in Miner County. Lorraine started her schooling in North Dakota. She attended high school in Rutland and graduated from Fedora High School in 1944. She attended Eastern State Normal College in Madison and began her teaching career in Sanborn and later Miner Counties. During those teaching years she met Robert Butrum. On October 4, 1947, they were married in Pipestone, Minnesota.

After years of drought, they sold the farm and moved to Sioux Falls in 1956. They wanted to get back to small town life, so in 1962, they moved to Garretson. Lorraine worked at the Jack & Jill Grocery Store and eventually went back to teaching at the Hermanson District #45 and the Lennox School District. She returned to Madison and received a BS Degree in Elementary Education from Dakota State College. In 1972, she was hired as the finance officer for the City of Garretson. She retired in 1989.

Lorraine was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, ZLCW, American Legion Auxiliary, National Finance Officers Association, Garretson Red Hats, and the Garretson Senior Citizens. She was involved with starting the Garretson Area Historical Society and Museum and held several positions including president and treasurer. She was heavily involved in the publishing of the Garretson History Books in 1989 and 2014.

Lorraine is survived by her children: Roger (Charleta) Butrum, Big Springs, TX, Joleen (Don) Facile, Sherman, and Duane (Kris) Butrum, Mitchell; 16 grandchildren; 33 great grandkids; six great great grandkids; a sister: Dolores Morrow; and many other relatives and friends.
