He was born on January 22, 1955, in Clear Lake, SD to Lyle and Marlys (Begalka) Haug. He attended Astoria High School. During his freshman year, he met Rosie Peterson and wanted to drive her home. But to do so, he had to ask his brother for his car. The very next day the car was Larry’s. And so began his love for cars and Rosie.
When he wasn’t driving Rosie around, he was working for a living at SoDak Gardens, picking up hay bales, trapping, and building for Quail Construction. Even though he was always busy working, he still managed to graduate from Clear Lake High School in 1973.
Afterwards, he studied auto mechanics at Canby Vo-Tech while still working for Quail Construction. Little did he know that his life was about change. Rosie came home to visit him and popped the question. Shortly after, Larry and Rosie were married on November 29, 1975. Then they moved to Sioux Falls.
Larry started working at Corbitt-Middlen as a salesman of speed parts, furthering his love for fast cars. His life took a turn when Rosie showed up at his job and said, “Honey, I’m so happy. We’re going to have a baby!” And so began their search for a new home in Crooks.
Larry and Rosie were blessed with two children: Angela and Clayton. While he was starting his family, he was approached to become a grain bin dealer for Butler. Larry and Rose decided to take a risk. Haug Steel Construction was started in January 1978. In the beginning, they were the first and only two employees. They sold Butler grain bins, buildings, and grain handling equipment.
Larry took pride in his role. He served on dealer advisory councils and won numerous sales awards. Larry not only enjoyed construction, but he loved building relationships with his customers and colleagues, which evolved into lifelong friendships.
Alongside his career at Haug Steel, he enjoyed restoring muscle cars, traveling on road trips with Rosie—or his “bride” as he liked to call her—spending time with his grandchildren, and taking family vacations. Despite not being a fan of sun exposure or water, he spent numerous weekends at the lake cabin with his family all the while thinking about reading his car magazines, planning his next project, or learning about something new.
Even though Larry despised high school and being told what to do, he had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. He lived life on his own terms. The only time he sat still was when he was reading. Otherwise, he was in constant motion, always fixing things and making his never-ending lists.
Larry lived life to the fullest until his last day with his bride. He is survived by his wife, Rose Haug; children: Angela (Joe Wabs) Haug, Bloomington, MN, Clayton (Darci) Haug, Crooks; five grandchildren: Ivy Haug, Paisley Haug, Asher Wabs, Axel Wabs, Dax Wabs; five siblings: Randy (Mary) Hauk, Beauvallon, Alberta, Canada, Robert Haug, Brookings, Debra (John) Hubers, Sioux Falls, Diane (Rod) Johnson, Hendricks, MN, Rebecca (Dave) Rodebaugh, Eau Claire, Wisconsin; his sister-in-law, his three brothers-in-law, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Vickey Haug, and sister-in-law, Kathy Haug.
