Kim Shiree Augustad, 59, of Mary Jane Brown Nursing Home in Luverne, MN, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019.
Kim was born August 22, 1959, to Frederick and Jacqueline Fods Augustad. She grew up on a farm between Colton and Chester. Her first-grade year, she attended Berdahl School District #89 and for grades 2-6 attended Franklin Elementary School (where her parents graduated from high school), near Madison, SD. She then went on to graduate from Chester Area High School. From there, she went on to attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. During her high school and college years, Kim was very involved in many activities. Kim was a talented student, a gifted vocalist and musician, who won many awards and sang at countless weddings and funerals. Kim was selected to attend Girl's State. She was voted Miss Prairie Village in 1977. Kim graduated from Augustana College with a degree in religion and social work. Kim went on to work as a Youth Minister in St. Louis, a pre-school teacher in Sioux Falls, and a nanny in Maryland, while undergoing testing for Huntington's Disease at the John Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. As a nanny, Kim was able to travel to many places, meet new people, and had many wonderful experiences. After spending time on the East Coast, she moved to Berkeley, CA, where she took classes at the seminary there. While in CA, she wrote a paper about the Great Wall of China. It was so well-written, she traveled to China to present her paper at a conference. Soon after, Kim returned to be with her family in Sioux Falls.
She will live forever in the hearts of her father, Fred Augustad of Luverne, MN; her sisters, Sonja Boen (Kent) of Sioux Falls, SD, Amy Sebert (Tom) of Hartford, SD, and Nichole Anderson of Sioux Falls, SD; her brothers, Todd Augustad (Renee) of Pipestone, MN, and Paul Augustad (Debbie) of Sioux Falls, SD. Kim adored her nieces and nephews as they adored her; Tara Augustad of Seattle, WA, Alex (Jillian) Augustad of Sioux Falls, SD, Paul Augustad of Storm Lake, IA, Austin Boen of Brookings, SD, Bennett, Olivia & Jack Sebert of Hartford, SD, and Ellie, Molly, & Oscar Anderson of Hartford, SD. She is also survived by Betty Augustad Larsen (aunt), Judy Augustad Foster (aunt), Lowell and Sharyl Fods Hass (uncle and aunt).
Kim was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Jacqueline Augustad and her older brother, Clifford John Augustad.
Kim will long be remembered for her genuine, contagious smile to all those who knew and loved her. Her smile was like a ray of sunshine and she lit up any room when she entered. Kim never let her HD control her life. She had a strong faith and great outlook on life. Often resident's family members would approach Kim's family to let them know what a positive impact she made in their lives. They felt so blessed to have Kim living in the "home" with their loved one.
Kim and her family sincerely appreciate the staff, residents and their families, volunteers, and countless visitors from the community who loved, supported, and cared for her these past 3 1/2 years while Kim was living in the Mary Jane Brown Nursing Home in Luverne, MN.
