Karen was born to Theodore and Noriene Kreutzfeldt on January 26, 1943 and grew up near Lyons. She graduated from Lyons High School in 1961, then attended and graduated from Dakota State College in 1965, earning a teaching degree.

Karen married her high school sweetheart, Adrian Hanson, on April 25, 1964 at West Nidaros Lutheran Church. Together they worked on the farm and raised four children.

In addition to working on the farm, Karen taught elementary school. Later in life she provided home health care to individuals throughout Minnehaha County.

Karen’s faith was very important to her. She cultivated a deep, personal relationship with Jesus. She found joy in caring for Ringo and many of the farm pets. She was a fan of Elvis and Julio Iglesias music, loved to go rummaging, baked the world’s best peach pie, and always looked forward to quilting. Later in life she thoroughly enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and word searches while watching the squirrels outside her window. Above all, her family was her life and she loved her children, grandchildren, and grandpup dearly.

Karen joined Heaven on Tuesday, August 24, at Luther Manor nursing home at the age of 78.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, LaDonn (Craig Krogstad) Powell, Renner; Vonda (John) Barnes, Sioux Falls; Mike (Becky) Hanson, Baltic; and Todd Hanson, Baltic; four grandchildren, Natasha Powell, Seattle, WA; Levi, Jenna, and Cheyenne Hanson, Baltic; a sister, Janet (Ron) Oaks, Dayton, MD, and grandpup, CJ (Natasha) Powell. Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Noriene and Theodore, her brother Teddy, and her husband Adrian.
