James Arthur Hymans, age 82, of Dell Rapids, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Thursday, January 25, 2024, at the Dell Rapids United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Wednesday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids.
Jim was born on August 30, 1941, in Doon, Iowa, to Henry and Gertie (Boon) Hymans. After turning one, Jim moved with his parents to South Dakota. They settled in the Buffalo Trading Post area west of Colton. He attended Washington Country School #132 and graduated from Franklin High School in 1959. He met Ellen Johnson after they were set up on a blind date. They were married on May 2, 1960, at First Reformed Church in Colton. They lived north of Buffalo Trading Post for one year until moving to the Odd Fellows Home Farm in Dell Rapids where Jim ran the farm. They lived there until moving to their current home east of Dell Rapids in December of 1972. Jim worked at John Stone’s mink farm, sold feed, managed milk trucks, and finally drove truck for the quarry.
Jim was a past member of the Dell Rapids Sportsmen’s Club and was a board member of the Dell Rapids Cemetery. He was a member of the Dell Rapids United Methodist Church where he served on the church board, Sunday school teacher and was head of the Methodist Men for several years. He loved to hunt, fish, and camp. He cherished the times that his grandchildren were able to go hunting with him.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen, Dell Rapids; children: Deb (Tim) Diede, Yankton, SD, Scott (Rena) Hymans, Sturgis, SD, Jamie (Bruce) Benz, Richfield, MN, and Tammy (Larry) Jensen, Union Center, SD; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; siblings: Priscilla (Jerry) Weeldreyer, Parker, SD, Arvin (Mary) Hymans, Lake Norden, SD, Patricia (Harlan) Froelich, Sioux Falls, Dianne (Keith) Hakeman, Rapid City, and Pamela Duggan, Viborg, SD; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Lyle and Harold.
