James was born February 8, 1941 to parents Peter and Verda (Austin) Fods at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.  He grew up in the Colton area and attended Franklin School.  After his education he started farming near Chester.

Jim married Leona Baartman May 17, 1958 in Rock Rapids, Iowa.  In 1961 they moved to the Fods Homestead west of Colton, where he continued to live and farm until his death.

Jim was a lifetime member of St. Jacobs Lutheran Church; where he was baptized and confirmed.  He served as custodian of the church for 25 years, mowed the St. Jacobs Cemetery for 46 years, and bowled for the St. Jacobs bowling team.  He also served on the board for Bethel Home in Madison and Buffalo Township.  He loved square dancing, country music and working and making things in his shop.  But most of all he loved spending time with his family.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Leona, Colton; children, Pam (Dale) Schut, Sioux Falls; Stan (Tammy) Fods, Verlyn (Nancy) Fods, Randy (Sarah) Fods, all of Madison; and Julie (Lonnie) Eining, Sioux Falls; seventeen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; a brother, Roger (Connie) Fods, Dell Rapids; a sister, Phyllis Swier, Sioux Falls; and a sister in law, Aggie Fods, Colton.

He was preceded in death by his parents Pete and Verda Fods, a brother Darrell, and brother in law, Marv Swier.
