Gordon was born on July 8, 1923, to Odd (Ed) and Bertha Winterton. Following graduation from Sherman High School, Gordon helped tend the family farm. Growing up was not all work. Gordon played bingo, bunco, and pool. Other entertainment included dancing, listening to the radio, riding motorcycles, and going to the movies with friends.
On September 14, 1947, Gordon and Evelyn were married in a double wedding ceremony with Betty (Winterton) and Bob Johnson at Jasper Lutheran Church in Jasper, MN. Following their marriage, Gordon and Evelyn started farming on the Silas Rekstad farm across the road from his folks. In 1957, they moved onto his folks' farm, where they and raised cows, pigs, and chickens and grew corn, oats, beans, and hay. They also enjoyed church activities, square dancing, and ballroom dancing, as well as spending many years traveling to AZ and TX for the winter. In his later life, Gordon enjoyed wood working projects for his home and for his grandchildren. Faith, family, and friends were most important, and the highlight of each week was visits from his great grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared his life are his children and their spouses: James (Julie) Winterton, Storm Lake, IA; Karen (Bruce) Rekstad, Garretson; Shirley (Bob) Garry, Sioux Falls; Gary (Kathy) Winterton, Paul (Peggy) Winterton, Neil (Colleen) Winterton, Sherman; his 17 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren; his sisters, Betty Johnson, Sioux Falls; Doris (Ordell) Krogstad, Baltic; Janet (Mike) Marsh, Leawood, KS; brothers Ordell Winterton, Sherman; Kenneth (Beverly) Winterton, Madison; and Merlyn Winterton, Colorado Springs, CO.
