Glen Earl Helgeson, 69, passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by love on the family farm in rural Renner, South Dakota, on Monday, September 7, 2020.
Glen was born on August 3, 1951, to Eleanor (Severson) and Robert “Bob” Helgeson. The family, including siblings Lyle, Cheryl, and Linda, resided on a farm between Renner and Crooks, South Dakota, until 1962, when they moved across a field to the family homestead (Helgeson Hill) where Glen remained until his passing.
As a lifelong farmer, Glen enjoyed all things farm-related, especially tractors (the red ones). He shared many stories of his love of the land, the work, and the people that surrounded him during the many years of farming. He was especially proud of the fact that he farmed side-by-side with his father until early 1996.
Glen graduated from Baltic High School in 1969. Over the years, he enjoyed cheering on the Baltic Bulldogs as a graduate, as a fan, as a father, and most recently as a grandfather.
While bowling in Dell Rapids, SD, Glen met Margaret Tonseth. A few months later, on November 20, 1976, Glen and Margaret were married. In the years that followed, they were joined on the family farm by daughters, Kara and Joy; as well as many beloved animals, both pets and livestock.
Glen was a member of West Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Crooks, SD.
During his life, Glen was a loyal friend, family member, and neighbor. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughters, Kara & Joy (Dustin Lewis); grandchildren, Carter, Olive & Eden; sister, Linda (Claire Hines); brother, Lyle; sister-in-law, Jane (Christy) Tonseth; nieces and nephews; and many more.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl & Richard “Dick” Dybvig; his infant daughter, Lyn Rachel; and other family members and friends, including his beloved dog, Slater.
Due to current health guidelines, Glen’s life will be celebrated during a private ceremony with family.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers that Glen’s life is celebrated by donating to the charity of your choice in his name and/or by sharing a story of Glen’s family (especially his grandchildren) via letter or email.
