Garret J. Reurink

February 14, 1931 — March 18, 2022

Garret Reurink, age 91 of Colton, SD, died March 18, 2022, at Riverview Healthcare Center in Flandreau, SD.

A Memorial service will take place at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 24, 2022, at the First Reformed Church in Colton, SD with Rev. David Tims officiating.

Burial will take place prior to the service at the Colton Cemetery.  Family and friends will gather at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Colton at 9:30 Thursday morning before processing to the cemetery for a 10:00 AM committal.  We will then make our way to the church for the memorial service.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 23 rd from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home in Colton, SD.

Garret J. Reurink was born February 14, 1931, in Chester, SD to Henry and Henrietta (Reka) (Vander Kolk) Reurink.  He was raised on the family farm west of Colton and received his education at Hillside School country school just up the hill from their family farm.

On September 23, 1952, he was united in marriage to Dorothy (Van Liere).  They lived on the family farm for 50 years.  In 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He worked as an aircraft mechanic   specializing in propellers.  He spent time in Japan and was honorably discharged in October 1959.  He was a 65-year-member of the      American Legion.

He was on the Hillside School board and the Colton Elevator board. Garret loved to tinker with and fix things and loved to laugh.  He       enjoyed taking vacations with his family, dancing at the VFW and     Arkota, playing cards and rolling dice, and spending time with his  family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Reurink of Colton; daughters, Sharleen Van Hofwegen, Peggy (Doug) Crane, and Lisa (Kim) Hansen.  Grandchildren: Jill (Bruce) Pearson, Kellie (Jared) Wicks, Derry (Megan) Van Hofwegen, Tara (Jon) Sievert, Nathan (Dolli) Crane, PJ Crane, Wyatt Hansen, Clay Hansen, Garret Hansen, and Valerie Hansen.  Great-grandchildren: Ellie, Ava, Reagan and  Emery Pearson; Damen Crane, Zach and Riley Hollander, Hannah Vaudrin, Ryan and Wyatt Myers; Braden, Corie, and Devin Wicks; Madelyn, Calvin, and Eli Van Hofwegen; Theo and Eleanore Sievert.

Garret was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Reka; sister and brother-in-law, Fanny and Vern Harnack; brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Bernice Reurink; brother, Gerald Reurink; grand-daughter, Stacey Van Hofwegen; and son-in-law, Pete Van Hofwegen.
