Duane McMahon, 88, of Sioux Falls passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 AM Thursday, February 22, 2018 at St. George Catholic Church in Hartford, SD. Burial will be in St. George Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Minnehaha Funeral Chapel in Colton, SD. In lieu of flowers memorials for Catholic Education may be directed to CCFESD in Duane’s name.

Duane B McMahon was born on November 8, 1929 to Frank and Angela (Hoffman) McMahon. He attended Lyons School and graduated in 1948. A month after graduating, he joined the South Dakota Air National Guard where he spent the next 24 years, except for the time spent on active duty during the Korean Conflict. After returning from active duty, in 1953, he began farming. On September 24, 1956, he married Darlene Mitchell in Hartford, SD. They had three sons: David, Mark, and Thomas. After farming, he sold insurance for Woodman Accident and Life until President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed him Postmaster of Colton. Duane retired after twenty-six and a half years at the post office. After 30 years in Colton, Darlene and Duane moved to Sioux Falls, SD.

Duane dedicated his life to serving his community. He was active on the Colton City Council, Huntimer Church Council, American Legion, and Moose Lodge in Sioux Falls. He also coached, umpired, and announced local baseball games for the town of Colton. He later volunteered at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. Alongside of serving his community, he enjoyed spending time on the golf course, playing cards, and dancing with his wife. Most of all, Duane enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his children and grandchildren.

Duane is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Darlene. His sons: David McMahon, Mark (Janelle) McMahon, and Tom (Renae) McMahon. His grandchildren: Lacey (Matt) Hayes, Kendal McMahon, Connor McMahon, Alison McMahon, and great- grandchildren: William Hayes, and Avonell Hayes. Also by numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. His brother Francis (Mary) McMahon, Robert McMahon, George (Sylvia) McMahon, and Patty (Jerry) Healy.
