Dorothy Uithoven (Warnes) daughter to Herman and Mildred Warnes was born September 23, 1930, in Volga, SD. She grew up in Volga on the family farm with her parents and 2 sisters, Donna and Rose Marie. Dorothy attended Volga high school where she sang in chorus, played clarinet, and was involved in Future Homemakers of America.
Dorothy married Jake Uithoven on December 16, 1947. Jake and Dorothy moved to a farm in Colton, SD where they lived for 54 years and raised 5 children: Sherry, Keith, Darrel, Terry, and Sandra. She had 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Jake and Dorothy were married for 64 years.
Dorothy’s faith in God began at a very young age. Attending church every Sunday was a top priority. She attended and led Bible studies, taught Sunday school, and was craft project manager for the girls’ church group. While at the care center in Vermillion her faith remained a core part of her life while attending church services and Bible studies.
Dorothy was heavily involved in the Muscular Dystrophy Association, worked in the Tri-Valley kitchen for 20 years, and had a passion for embroidering, reading, crafts, and playing Scrabble. Each of the grandchildren have happy memories of baking, gardening, and endless crafts with Grandma Dorothy.
Dorothy provided a superb role model for her family to accept challenges, to make the best of all situations, and to keep smiling! Her positive outlook on life will be greatly missed by not only her immediate family and their spouses, but also by her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and the countless lives she touched.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Mildred; husband, Jake; daughter, Sherry; and son, Terry.
