Donna Sophia Edmundson, age 80, of Garretson, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne after a courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare neurodegenerative disease.
Donna was born on May 27, 1937, in Sioux Falls, to Clemence and Marie (Meyer) Oppold. She grew up on a farm between Sioux Falls and Harrisburg and graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1955. She married LeMoyne Edmundson on February 28, 1960 at Palisade Lutheran Church. Donna worked at E.W. Smith Insurance in Sioux Falls and Rock County Bank in Luverne prior to raising her three children on their family farm in rural Garretson. She then worked for 24 years at Palisade Manor in Garretson where she was known for her persistent work ethic, positive attitude, warm smile and patience.
Donna was also an active member of Palisade Lutheran Church and was involved in Ladies Aid, WELCA Circle and taught Sunday school when her children were younger. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed attending their various school activities and sporting events. Whether it was hockey, basketball, baseball or attending county fairs, she always supported her grandchildren and all of their aspirations. She had a love for the Minnesota sports teams, but was truly an avid Minnesota Twins fan. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, baking, and cooking. She made wonderful meals that were a trademark of all family gatherings. Donna always looked forward to having a houseful of family for holidays and summer road trips with them to the Black Hills. The love and compassion she had for her family and friends will forever be cherished—she always chose to see the good in everyone.
We may have lost Donna in a physical presence, but she is here in spirit with us all. We firmly believe, as she also did and taught us to believe, that someday our Heavenly Father will reunite us again. Until then, as a family, we are thankful and eternally grateful to have had her in our lives and see the ways in which she touched others’ lives as well. Donna was a woman who embodied grace, and despite her complications with (PSP) in later years, her dignity still remained. She was a woman of faith and led a selfless life—always passionate and willing to serve others. Donna will be greatly missed by so many but never forgotten. She loved angels and now we have gained the best one.
