Donald “Dutch” George Schubert died February 13, 2019, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD, surrounded by his family after a short illness with cancer. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 16, 2019, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Flowerfield Cemetery, rural Hills, MN.
Donald was born on March 22, 1929, on the family farm near Lester, IA. He graduated from Lester High School in 1947. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the Korean War as a Radio Operator and Instructor. He played baseball for the Marines and was well known for his skillful pitching. He was even being drafted by New York Giants (now San Francisco Giants); however, the war broke out, and he was unable to fulfill his dream of playing professional baseball.
Upon returning home, he played fast-pitch softball and independent basketball with his friend, Jim Roning, which led to the meeting and marrying of Jim’s sister, Marcella. They made their home in Lester where Donald was a bank clerk and later a carpenter. In 1968, he moved to Garretson, SD, and was employed by the Great Northern Railroad until he retired in 1991. After retirement, he worked for the Devil’s Gulch Park explaining to people the history of Jesse James and Devil’s Gulch. His friendly, outgoing personality helped him to never meet a stranger. In 2011, he and Marcella moved to an apartment in Brandon, SD.
Outside of work, he was an avid Minnesota Twins and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He was a history buff collecting several history biographies as well as one for every president. He also spent many hours embroidering themed quilting squares, such as state symbols, state flowers, and state birds. All of his children and grandchildren received one of his themed sets and have made them into quilts.
He is survived by 4 sons – Donald “Gene” (Diane) of Coralville, IA, Calvin (Pat) of Sisseton, SD, Robin of Sioux Falls, Kevin (Irene) of LaVista, NE and a daughter, Michelle Schubert of Brandon, SD. He has six grandchildren – Kyle (Brooke), Karyn (Ben), Kristen (Clinton), Alex, Ally, and Adam as well as 2 great-grandsons – Anders & Oliver
He is preceded in death by his wife Marcella (2015), his parents Elvin and Katherine Schubert, two brothers, and two sisters.
