Charles Kenneth Haring

Charles Kenneth Haring, 72, of Garretson, died unexpectedly on Thursday, May 10, 2018, at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls surrounded by his family.  Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at the Carrington Cemetery in Carrington, ND.

Charles was born February 6, 1946, at home on the family farm near Cayuga, ND during a snowstorm to Kenneth & Marion (Peffer) Haring.  He attended grade school in Cayuga and graduated from Sargent Central High School in 1964.  He graduated from Wahpeton School of Science with an associate degree in Accounting.

He then attended Interstate Business School in Fargo, ND where he met his future wife Madelyn (Nelson) Haring.  They were married April 1, 1967, and enjoyed 51 years of marriage.  He joined the Army National Guard and served seven years before being honorably discharged in 1973.  They had three children:  Joel in 1967, Gaye Lynn in 1970, and Lyle in 1975.

He was a bookkeeper in Minneapolis, MN and Prosper, ND.  He then managed grain elevators for over 40 years in Grand Rapids, ND; Drake, ND; New England, ND; Selby, SD; Miller, SD; Garrison, ND; and Martin, ND before retiring in 2010.  He was awarded a gold watch for over 31 years of service to Central Harvest States while he managed the elevator in Garrison, ND. He served on the church council of three Lutheran churches, was a member of the Drake, ND Volunteer Fire Department, the SD American Legion, and Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson.

He enjoyed family gatherings and watching and attending sporting events, especially those of his grandchildren, the Minnesota Vikings and Twins.  He enjoyed travelling with his wife and family, taking stats for his grandson’s baseball team, coaching a softball team, golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting, and playing cards until in recent years when his health failed.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Madelyn, Garretson; daughter, Gaye Lynn (Greg) Beaner, Garretson; son, Lyle (Jennifer) Haring, Mitchell; grandchildren: Briana Beaner, Bismarck, ND, Baylee and Brayden Beaner, Garretson, and Carly, Taylor, Halle, Matthew, and Ashley Haring, Mitchell; and sister, JoAnn Funfar, Coon Rapids, MN.

He is preceded in death by his son, Joel Charles Haring in 1986; his parents, Kenneth and Marion Haring; step-father Don Kleingarn; sister, Marlys Kadoun and brothers Lee and Greg Haring.
