Betty Ann Hammer, age 85, of Garretson, passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson. Interment will be in the Norway Cemetery, rural Garretson. Memorials may be directed to the First Lutheran Church in Sherman.

Betty was born on September 13, 1931, in Sioux Falls to William and Amanda (Jastram) Horeis. She grew up in Humboldt and was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Humboldt. In 1947 she graduated from Humboldt High School. Following her graduation she worked at Hutton Tufty until 1950.

On May 7, 1950, Betty married John Hammer. The couple spent their entire life living and farming north of Garretson. Betty was a very active member of First Lutheran Church in Sherman, and greatly enjoyed her time in the quilting group. Betty loved the outdoors and could always be found tending to her flowers and garden, or feeding the birds. She was an avid photographer, and her pictures filled countless albums at her home. Betty and John enjoyed traveling together and attending polka dances. But Betty’s biggest treasure in life was her family and friends.

Survivors include her children: Neil (Charlene) Hammer, Alexandria, MN, Janet (David) Quamen, Crooks, SD, and Joann (Perry) Eckhoff, Tea, SD; brother-in-law, Allan (Ruth) Hammer, Garretson; sister-in-law, Sanda Horeis, Waconia, MN; grandchildren: Michelle (Ben) VanZante, Lana (Giovanni) Marchese, Kirby (Carrie) Quamen, Kimberly (Dylan) Koblank, Kelly (Tad) Eggleston, Marques (Krista) Eckhoff, and Megan (Clayton) Wulf; great-grandchildren: Hannah, Livia, Jaeda and Natalie VanZante; Vincent, Alessandro and Cristiano Marchese; Joshua, Annika and Zachariah Quamen; Rufus and Olive Koblank; and Marek and Rowan Wulf. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Amanda (Jastram) Horeis; husband, John; brother, Bill Horeis; sister, Beverly Riedel; and an infant brother, Lee.
