Barbara M. Skrovig, age 94, of Colton, passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Thursday, February 21, 2019, at First Lutheran Church, Colton. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Wednesday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Chapel, Colton.
Barb was born on May 25, 1924, near White, South Dakota, to Homer and Rilla (Haber) Simmons. She attended country school and graduated from White High School in 1942. She then attended Dakota Wesleyan and General Beadle State Teachers College.
Barb married Donovan C. “Slip” Skrovig on January 24, 1950 in Luverne, Minnesota. She taught school in Brookings County for 3 years and then taught for Colton Public and Tri-Valley Schools. She retired in 1986 after 42 years of teaching.
Barb was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Colton and WELCA, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved music, but family was the most important thing in her life.
Survivors include her sister, Jacquelyn Schultz, White, SD; special “granddaughters”: Lisa (Corey) Foster, Chester, Stacy Handshumaker, Harrisburg; special niece Ronda (Scott) Wolfe, Sioux Falls; special “great grandchildren”: Kennedy Foster, Jacob Foster, Shelby (Brad) Weaver and their children, Braelyn and Austin, Alex Handshumaker and Warren Handshumaker; two other nieces, a nephew and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Don on November 6, 1990, and a special niece, Patricia Lamb.
