Agnes Grace Schmiesing, age 90, of Garretson, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Public Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 AM Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at St Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Garretson, with visitation, with the family present, one hour prior to the mass. The family requests that masks be worn, and social distancing be practiced. The funeral mass will be live streamed at the Minnehaha Funeral Home & Cremation Services Facebook page. Visitation, without the family present, will be from 5-7:00 PM Monday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Legion Auxiliary of the Henry G Fix Post No 23 in Garretson.
Agnes Grace Geraets was born September 25, 1930 in Dell Rapids, SD, the daughter of John and Rose (Rickerl) Geraets. She was the youngest of thirteen children. She grew up on a farm, west of Dell Rapids and moved to town in her teens. She attended country school and St. Mary’s, and graduated in 1948. After graduating, she went onto nursing school for a short period of time.
Agnes met Dale Schmiesing at a dance at the Pavilion in Dell Rapids. They were united in marriage on May 7, 1953. They made their home in Sioux Falls for a short period of time before moving to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO while Dale was in the Army. They moved back to Sioux Falls and lived there till 1994. From there, they moved to Garretson till October 2019 after which they became residents of Orchard Hills in Dell Rapids. They celebrated 67 wonderful years together, with many great memories. They had several very close couples that they spent many nights dancing the night away or playing cards.
Agnes was a member of St Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Garretson, SD. She was an active member of the Henry G Fix Post 23 American Legion Auxiliary for 61 years and served in several positions. Agnes enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing, dancing and playing cards. Dale and Agnes spent many nights dancing at the Arkota Ballroom and the Luverne VFW and numerous other old-time dances. They especially enjoyed attending the Polka Festivals in MN. She also has bragging rights to getting a hole in one at River Ridge Golf Course. Agnes loved playing bridge and other card games with her family and friends. After retirement, Dale and Agnes wintered in Arizona, Texas, and Florida with Barb and Louis. Over the years, they have enjoyed many fishing trips and thoroughly enjoyed going to the river with Sharon and Bill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, John, Peter, Clarence, George, James, Charles, Leonard, and Vince, and her sisters, Marie, Catherine, and Johanna.
Agnes is survived by her husband, Dale, daughters, Barbara Phipps (Louis), Sharon Dickson (Bill), Renae Benda (Brian) and son, DeWayne (Connie), her six grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, and 5 great, great grandchildren plus one more due in March. She is also survived by her sister Rose Ann Slinger, and sister-in-law Joyce Geraets and many nieces and nephews and friends.
