Marvin Edward Wingert, M.D. died Monday February 18th at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 A.M. Friday, February 22, 2008 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Garretson. Visitation will be from 2-5:00 P.M. Thursday, at Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson and will resume at 6:00 P.M at the church with the family present, with a Prayer Service and Rosary beginning at 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Garretson Community Ambulance.
Marvin was born October 26th 1931 to Matthias and Lyda (Doeden) Wingert in Canistota, SD. He graduated from high school in 1949. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Medical Science from the University of South Dakota and received his Doctorate from Marquette University in 1957. This was followed by an internship at Charles Miller Hospital in St. Paul, MN.
Marvin married Audene Stoeveken on May 5th 1956 at St. Agnes in Vermillion, SD. They moved to Garretson in July of 1959. There he began his private practice and continued to serve the community until 2003. He then continued to practice medicine at Avera McKennan’s Free clinic and the Flandreau Santee Sioux Clinic until ill health forced his retirement in 2005.
Dr. Wingert served on the South Dakota Right to Life Board of Directors from 1973 to 1978, and again from 1982 to 2005 at which time he was presented their Lifetime Service Award.
Throughout his career he was active in the community serving as the Medical Director for Palisade Manor and the Garretson Community Ambulance. He was also a member of St. Rose of Lima Parish, the Knights of Columbus, and the Garretson Volunteer Fire Department.
Marvin had a passion for family, medicine, community, and unborn children. He loved hunting and always had his dog at his side.
Survivors include his wife, Audene of Garretson; sons: Donald (Jane), Sioux Falls and Matthew (Tricia), Valley Springs; daughters: Kathryn (Eric) Hall, Plymouth, Minnesota, Elissa (Terry Stoterau) Kallsen, Garretson, Mary (Scott) DeWitte, Garretson, Anne Castaneda, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Maria Wingert, St. Paul, Minnesota; grandchildren: Anthony, Joseph, Alex, Caitlin, Matt, Liz, Adam, Audene, Stephen, Taylor, Jacob and Tony; and three sisters: Veronica (Cecil) Hurry, Security, Colorado, Velna Tieszen, Rapid City, and Marcia (Henry) Williams, Brookings. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Marvin E. Jr., one sister, and three brothers.
