Genevieve “Toots” Garry, age 79, of Garretson, died on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at her home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 am Saturday, February 23, 2008 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Garretson. Burial will be in the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-5:00 pm Friday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson and resume at 6:00 pm with the family present at the church with a Wake Service at 7:00 pm. Memorials may be directed to Koats 4 Kidz (Jeff Garry Memorial) or to the Broom Tree Retreat.
Genevieve was born July 12, 1928 at Salem, South Dakota to parents Gregor and Susie (Gessner) Roling. She grew up in Salem and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Salem. She married Gerald R. Garry September 22, 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salem and have lived in Garretson since 1957. There she worked at Sander’s Printing and Palisade Manor.
Toots was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the Altar Society and The Birthday Club.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Gerald, Garretson; her six children and their spouses, Roger & Linda Garry, Bennington, NE; Robert & Shirley Garry, Sioux Falls; Mary & Don Frerk, Garretson; Mark & Shirley Garry, Garretson; Jerome & Elaine Garry, Rochester, MN; Susie & Jeff Weber, Sioux Falls; a daughter in law, Julie Garry, Sioux Falls; nineteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd Roling, Salem; special family members, Florence Feterl, Lead; Theresa Bartscher, Fulton; brother in law, Donald (Chris) Garry, Sioux Falls; sisters in law, Evelyn Garry, Webster; Anita Garry, Sandy, UT; Veronica Garry, Kennesaw, GA; Sister Elaine Garry, Aberdeen; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son Jeff.
Toots’ first loves were her faith, family and friends. She truly enjoyed her many roses and her vegetable garden. Monthly, she shared great times with The Birthday Club. Together with her husband Gerald, they enjoyed watching school children come and go from school activities. In the summer months, they enjoyed their many camping friends at various parks in South Dakota. In the winter they spent several months at the Trophy Garden Resort in Alamo, Texas.
