Jack Lee Den Herder

Jack L. Den Herder, 74, of Valley Springs died Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at his home. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM with the family present from 5 - 7:00 PM on Friday - September 19, 2008 at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson, SD. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Saturday, September 20, 2008 at First Lutheran Church, Valley Springs, SD. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Valley Springs, SD.

Jack was born March 12, 1934 in Sioux Center, Iowa to parents Ralph and Norma (Lowe) Den Herder. As an infant he moved with his family to Valley Springs, where he attended school and graduated from Valley Springs High School. Jack married Rosalie Mandler August 8, 1953 at Willow Creek Lutheran Church near Dell Rapids. Rosalie died May 8, 1999. He was employed at John Morrell and Company for 33 years. Jack was a member of First Lutheran Church, where he served as a deacon and was past president of the Optimist Club. Jack was a hard working entrepeneur owning HyPane Gas, several rental properties, JJ Auto and Southern Estates, a real estate development for Valley Springs, SD. Jack's spare time was spent enjoying the restoration of collector cars, fishing for walleye and perch at the family cabin on the shores of Big Stone Lake.

Survivors include, a partner, Maurine Peterson, Valley Springs; a son, Jeff (Erin) Den Herder, Sioux Falls; daughters, Jani Mae (Simon Cail) Den Herder and Julie Rose Den Herder, both of Las Vegas; Jody Morrow, Dell Rapids; his grandchildren, Justin, Trevor, Dylan, and McKenna Den Herder; Jesse, Joel, and John Shafer; and Jack Hirchert; great-grandchildren, Devon Den Herder and Evan Shafer; a sister, Sandra (Neal) Scadden, Valley Springs; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie, parents and two brothers - Bob and Kenneth “Skeeter” Den Herder.
