Lena “Shimmel” Hinz, 101, of Colton died Sunday, April 30, 2007 at the Colton Assisted Living Center in Colton. Funeral Services will begin at 2:00 PM Friday, May 4, 2007 at the United Methodist Church, Colton. Burial will be in the Colton Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM Thursday with the family present from 7-8:00 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Colton.
Shimmel was born February 23, 1906 at Sutley, South Dakota to parents Henry and Christina (Buckenberger) Ackerman. In 1909 she moved with her parents to Herried, South Dakota, where she graduated from Herried High School in 1926. She then attended Aberdeen Normal and received her teaching certificate. She taught country school near Herried for one year.
Shimmel married Carl Hinz September 17, 1927 in Herried. After their marriage they moved to Campbell, Minnesota before moving to Colton in 1929. She worked for Thompson Drug Store and later worked at Berge’s Store until she was 80 years old.
She was an active member of the United Methodist, where she served on the church council, was president of the ladies aid, taught Sunday school and served as Sunday school superintendent. She also was a member of the Eastern Star and the Colton P.T.A, where she served as president.
Grateful for having shared her life are her sons and their wives, Rick and Pat Hinz, Adams, MN; Don and Arlene Hinz, Baltic, nine grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; a sister, Irna Stienecker, Rockford, Ill; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Carl on November 20, 2002 a son, Steven, four brothers and two sisters.
