Veryl F. Julson, age 80, of Sherman, SD, passed away on Monday, November 3, 2008, at Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, MN. Prayer services will begin at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson. Visitation will begin at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, with the family present from 5-7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Private family burial will be held at Hills of Rest Memorial Park in Sioux Falls.
Veryl Florence Julson was born to W. Earl and Florence McDowell on February 8, 1928, in Springwater Township, Rock County, Minnesota, on the farm of her Hoime grandparents.
Veryl graduated eighth grade from District 21 rural school, Springwater Township, Rock County. During the summer of 1947, she flew solo in a plane from her father’s airport on the farm.
On February 22, 1948, Veryl wed Wesley C. Julson in the Lutheran parsonage at Garretson. Veryl was a lifetime farm daughter and wife. She and Wes were farmers in Palisades Township, South Dakota, selling milk for 47 years. Veryl served on the South Dakota Farm Bureau Board of Directors as Women’s Chairman and was named Outstanding Farm Bureau Woman of the Year of South Dakota District 2 in 1971. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, participating in circle and serving as a Bible study leader. She resided at home, actively participating on the family farm, until October 10, 2008.
Survivors include her son and his wife, Bob and Betty Julson, Garretson; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Steven Holmes, Houston, Texas; two grandsons, Cody and Kipp Julson; three granddaughters, Erin Karnofski, Tina Scott and Kassie Holmes; one great granddaughter, Alyssa Scott; and two step great granddaughters, Teila and Teisha; one brother and wife, Dale B. and Rosy McDowell; and sister-in-law, Bev McDowell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley, her parents Earl and Florence, and her brother Dean.
During Veryl’s days at The Cottage, she was saddened to hear of Tony Dean’s passing. She had great appreciation for his work and enjoyed his articles and shows for many years. At her request, if you desire, memorials may be directed to the Tony Dean Memorial Fund, 1013 North Grand, Pierre, SD 57501. Donations will be used to purchase a public recreation area for public hunting that will be named for Dean.
Veryl wanted to be remembered for her love of her family and the farm.
