Duane “Don” Hinz, 80, of Baltic died Friday, March 6, 2009 at the Dougherty House Hospice. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Colton. Burial will be in the Pioneer Cemetery, Baltic. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8:00 PM Tuesday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.
Duane Carl was born June 4, 1928 in Bismarck, North Dakota to parents Carl and Lena “Simmel” (Akerman) Hinz. As an infant he moved with his parents to Colton, where he received his education and graduated from Colton High School in 1947. In high school he earned All State Honors as a guard in basketball. After his graduation he entered the United States Navy, where he served as a Frogman in the Korean Conflict.
Don married Arlene Qualseth March 26, 1964, they lived in Rapids City, Sioux Falls and Brooking before moving to Baltic in 1985. In Rapid City he worked for Sioux Bus Lines and Standard Oil. In Brookings he worked for Einspahr Ford.
Don was a life time member of the VFW.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Arlene, Baltic; three sons, Randy, El Cajon, CA; Brian, South Lake Tahoe, CA; Troy, Denver, CO; two daughters, Lauri, El Cajon, CA; Kelly, Garretson; 12 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and a brother, Rick (Pat) Hinz, Adams, MN. Don was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Steven and a son, Duane “Rusty” in 1984.
