Martin A. Schettler, age 88, of Sherman, died on Thursday, August 27, 2009, at Dougherty House Hospice in Sioux Falls. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1:30 P.M. Monday, August 31, 2009, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Garretson. Visitation will begin at 3:00 P.M. Sunday at the church, with a Rosary and Prayer Service beginning at 5:00 P.M.
Martin was born on November 15, 1920, at Larchwood, Iowa to parents Frank and Mary (Schreurs) Schettler. On September 3, 1946, he married Theresa Scholten. He farmed in the Larchwood area until 1950, when he moved to and began farming in the Sherman, South Dakota area. Theresa died on April 22, 1998.
Martin was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Garretson. He was involved in the church as a board member, usher and a Catholic Order of Foresters member. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding 4-wheelers and telling stories.
Grateful for having shared his life are his children: Barbara (Jerry) Schneider of Brandon, Beverly (Jamie) Johnson of Sioux Falls, Karen (Larry) Peters of Wagner and Keith (Terri) Schettler of Whitewood, SD; ten grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Emma Lucas of Larchwood, IA, Clara George of Rock Rapids, IA and Bert Kramer of Inwood, IA; and a brother, Alvin Schettler of Larchwood. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Leo and Francis; sisters, Darlene Schettler, Loretta Roemen, Amelda Anderson and Margaret DeSmet.
