Betty Mae Docken

January 2, 1929 — November 16, 2009

Betty M. Docken, 80, of Baltic died Monday, November 16, 2009 at Sanford Foundation Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls after a year and a half battle with cancer.

Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM Friday, November 20, 2009 at Baltic Lutheran Church, Baltic. Burial will be in the East Nidaros Lutheran Cemetery, rural Baltic. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM Thursday with the family present from 6-8:00 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.

Betty Mae Johnson was born on January 2, 1929 to parents Joseph and Inga (Oien) Johnson in Dell Rapids. She was a lifelong resident of Baltic and graduated from Baltic High School in 1947.

Betty married Rodney Docken on May 18, 1957 in Luverne, Minnesota. To this union, two children were born; Gary and Gale.

Betty held various positions working at Wilson Storage and Transfer, Baltic Farmers Elevator and Farmers Insurance Company.

She was active at Baltic Lutheran Church, when her children were growing up. She served as director of the youth choir, Sunday school teacher, adult choir and was a member and officer in the Baltic Ladies Aid. In later years Betty enjoyed her coffee group and eating out with friends.

Betty loved her two grandsons and enjoyed watching their many basketball games in high school and college. After becoming ill, it was a goal of hers to attend her grandson Matt and Monica’s wedding. She enjoyed the day and even managed a dance or two with her son and grandson.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Rodney Docken, Baltic; a son Gary Docken and his wife Patricia, Savoy, Ill; a daughter Gale Begeman and her husband Mike, Sioux Falls; grandsons, Matt (Monica) Begeman, Sioux Falls and Mitch Begeman, Vermillion; two sisters, Lila Swiden and Delores (John) Moe; a brother, Orill (Bonnie) Johnson; sisters in law, Lynda Johnson, Beverly Johnson, Marlys Schmidt, and Waneta (Richard) Erickson and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Gerald, Richard and Verlyn Johnson, sister Donna Welbes and a nephew Darin Johnson.
