Joan Marie Pollmann

Joan M. Pollmann, 72, of Dell Rapids died Sunday, May 27, 2007 at her home. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM. Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids, Dell Rapids, SD. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8:00 PM Tuesday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Stordahl Cemetery, rural Dell Rapids.


Joan was born April 11, 1935, to Joe and Sylvia Nielson on a farm near Montrose, SD. She graduated from Canistota High School in 1953 and continued her education at General Beadle State Teacher’s College. She taught elementary school for thirteen years starting in a country school near Canistota and continuing in both Canistota and Baltic. Joan spent many years teaching Sunday School in both Baltic and Dell Rapids and served nine years on the Dell Rapids School Board. For the past 37 years, Joan ran a home day-care providing love and guidance to numerous children in the area.

On August 1, 1959, Joan married James Pollmann in Canistota.

She is survived by her husband James of Dell Rapids; four children Julie (Brian) Relf of Flandreau, Jay of Golden, CO, Jann (Scott) Saxon of Dell Rapids, SD, and John of Flagstaff, AZ; four grandchildren Brooke and Baylee Relf and Alec and Aaron Saxon; a sister Phyllis (Delmar) Giegling of Canistota, SD; many nieces and nephews; and the many children who spent their days at “Joan’s House”.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert.
