Dawn Mae Stockwell, age 81, of Garretson died on Thursday, February 28, 2008 at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at Eastside Baptist Church, Sioux Falls with interment in the Summit Hill Cemetery, rural Garretson. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 P.M. Monday at Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.
Dawn was born on March 23, 1926 in Hendricks, Minnesota to Gilmore and Mary (Sommervold) Johnson. She grew up in Hendricks and graduated from Hendricks High School. On August 9, 1945, Dawn married Robert A. Stockwell in Luverne, Minnesota. The couple moved to a farm near Aurora, South Dakota and then moved to another farm near Hartford. In 1965, they settled on a farm near Garretson. Robert died on August 7, 1994. Dawn continued living on the farm until moving into Garretson in 1996.
Dawn was an avid collector of many things. She loved her cats and was a very kind, meek, humble and giving person.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Curtis, Garretson and Mary Leigh (Daryl) Van Meeteren, Lake Hendricks, MN; grandchildren: April Saarloos, Angela Saarloos, Allissa (David) Harms, Robert W. Van Meeteren, Callum Yocius; step-grandchildren: Robert J. (Theresa) Van Meeteren and Jill (Jim) Zeutenhorst; great-grandchildren: Sarah & Michael Ames, Derek & David Arnold, Kara & Allyson Harms; siblings, Robert (Irene) Johnson, Delores Stave, Richard (Agnes) Johnson, Thomas (Elaine) Johnson all of Hendricks, and Vernon (Evie) Johnson, Ivanhoe, MN; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Miller, Garretson. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Edwin Sommervold and Glen Johnson; and a sister, Loretta Johnson.
