Hazel J. Moe

September 12, 1919 — April 3, 2010

Hazel Jeanette Moe, 90, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, formerly of Brookings, died Saturday, April 3, 2010 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 6, at West Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Crooks. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 5, 2010 at the church. Burial will be in the West Nidaros Cemetery.

Hazel was born on September 12, 1919 in Sioux Falls, the daughter of Joseph and Cora (Ulvilden) Otterby. She received her education in Crooks and was a 1936 graduate of Washington High School in Sioux Falls. She continued her education at Augustana College and graduated in 1940 with a degree in Education. She then taught English and music in Bison for two years, Elkton for one year and Madison for two years.

Hazel married Dennis Leroy Moe on December 27, 1943. After moving to Brookings in 1946, she taught English at SDSU School of Agriculture in 1946 and 1947. After taking time off to raise her family, she resumed teaching at SDSU in the early 1960’s until her retirement in 1982. Dennis died on April 19, 1998.

In 1950 Hazel and Dennis were one of four couples to organize Sunnyview, Inc. (housing neighborhood). Hazel was committed to Sunnyview’s sense of community and the quality of family life it provided. While living in Brookings she was an active officer and member of First Lutheran Church, the SDSU Faculty Women’s Club and Sons of Norway (Lodge #508) and many other university and community organizations. After moving to Sioux Falls in 2005 Hazel became a member of West Nidaros Lutheran Church where she had been baptized and married. She has been an active friend and neighbor at Dow Rummel Village. Hazel will be remembered as a woman of strong faith, love and concern for people, grace and dignity.

Grateful or having shared her life are two sons: Richard (Pat) Moe, Sioux Falls; Charles Moe, Renner; two daughters: Kristine (Paul) Vick, Burke, Virginia; Susan (Vaughn) Jensen, St. Paul, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Michael (Alison) Vick, Reston, Virginia; Sarah Vick, Wichita Falls, Texas; Michael (Bobbi) Quinlivan, Sioux Falls; Cait Quinlivan, San Francisco, California; three great grandchildren: Adeline and Richard Vick and Abbie Quinlivan; a brother, Donald Otterby, New Brighton, Minnesota; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two brothers, Curtis and Leonard Otterby.
