John Edward Koopman, 77, of Sioux Falls died suddenly following a heart attack on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Thursday, December 2, 2010 at Good News Reformed Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8:00 PM Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at the church. Burial will be in the Colton Cemetery.
John was born December 12th, 1932 in Colton, South Dakota to parents Gerrit and Helen (Persing) Koopman. He grew up in Colton and graduated from Colton High School in 1951. He then attended General Beadle in Madison.
John married Barbara Larson on August 19, 1954 at the Congregational Church in Badger, SD. The couple enjoyed teaching and being involved in education in several different communities in South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa. John also served as a principal and coach in several of the districts and was the Superintendent at Scotland High School from 1970 to 1980. He was also involved in the Insurance Business owning agencies in Aurora, NE and Storm Lake, IA and was a crop insurance adjuster for Rural Community Insurance Services. They moved to Sioux Falls in October of 2000. Barbara died January 11th, 2009.
John was a member of Good News Reformed Church in Sioux Falls. Grateful for having shared his life are his sons, Bradley (Beverly) Koopman, Harrisburg; Douglas (Jodee) Koopman, Boulder City, Nevada; his five grandchildren Jennifer (Ben) Powers, Christopher (Fiancé Brianna Erickson), Karlee, DJ, and Peyton; four brothers, Donald James (Donna) Koopman, Colton; William (Kathy) Koopman, Coppell, TX; Lloyd (Carolyn) Koopman, Smithville, TX, LeRoy (Marie) Koopman, Colton; two sisters, Doris Schildhauer, Colton; Evelyn (Rick) English, Tripp; and many nieces and nephews. His wife, Barbara and his parents preceded him in death.
