Gerald Raymond Garry, age 82, of Garretson, died on Friday, December 17, 2010, at Avera Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Garretson. Visitation with the family present will be from 3-5:00 P.M. Monday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, 101 S. Leslie Dr., Garretson, and will resume at 6:00 P.M. at the church with a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Koats 4 Kidz (Jeff Garry Memorial), the Garretson Community Swimming Pool, or Broom Tree Retreat Center.

Gerald was born January 18, 1928, in Bridgewater, South Dakota to Harry and Josephine (Lanners) Garry. He grew up in Salem and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Salem. He married Genevieve “Toots” Roling on September 22, 1948, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salem. They moved to Garretson in 1957 when Gerald went to work for the Garretson Hatchery. In 1968, he went into the insurance business and remained active in Garry Financial Services until 2000, when he retired. In 2009, Gerald moved to Avera Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls.

As an active member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Garretson, he served on numerous church boards. He was active on the city council, a charter member of the Lion’s Club, and a member of the Commercial Club. He was also involved with little league baseball and the Garretson Community Pool.

Grateful for having shared his life are his children and their spouses: Roger & Linda Garry, Bennington, NE, Bob & Shirley Garry, Sioux Falls, Mary & Don Frerk, Garretson, Mark & Shirley Garry, Garretson, Jerome & Elaine Garry, Rochester, MN, and Susie & Jeff Weber, Sioux Falls; a daughter-in-law, Julie Garry, Sioux Falls; nineteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Don Garry, Sioux Falls; and a sister: Sr. Elaine Garry, Aberdeen. Other special family members are his sisters-in-law: Veronica Garry, Kennesaw, GA; Evelyn Garry, Webster and Anita Garry, Sandy UT; brother-in-law, Lloyd Roling and sisters-in-law: Florence Feterl and Theresa Bartscher.

Gerald was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve “Toots”; son, Jeff; brothers: Jim, Russ, Ken, Les and Pat; and a sister, Rose Wheeler.
