Betty was born July 23, 1932 to parents William and Carrie (McCarty) Breuer in Larchwood, Iowa. She grew up in Larchwood and attended St. Mary Catholic School. After graduation she worked at the Book and Stationary Store in Sioux Falls. Betty married Irvin Schreurs August 3, 1955 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Larchwood, Iowa. After their marriage they lived, farmed, and raised their seven children in the Baltic-Garretson area. Betty was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Garretson, where she taught catechism. Betty was a member of the Baltic American Legion Auxiliary, where she held many offices including President in 1986-1987 and also had served on the Minnehaha County FHA committee.
Her family was the center of her life. She looked forward to the “Schreurs family picnic” every summer when all of her kids and their families would come home to the farm for lots of food and fun. There was always room at her table and she was the first to help a friend in need. She worked side by side with her husband for 51 years and always said that when the boys were old enough to drive the tractors and trucks she would quit, but she never really did. Betty and Irvin were very much in love and did everything together. They spent their winters in Las Vegas for the last 20 years. She didn’t like the cold and snow. She would much rather be warm and play bingo. She had a lot of little sayings but her favorite was “to be is to be”.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Irvin, Baltic; her children and their spouses, Steve & Tina Schreurs, Ipswich; Bonnie & Scott Mews, Crooks; Rocky & Gaila Schreurs, Baltic; Shawn & Barb Schreurs, Centennial, CO; Paul & Joy Schreurs, Tea; Jay & Lori Schreurs, Mitchell; Jess & Ann Schreurs, Brandon; eighteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a sister EllaRee Doss, Sioux Falls; and many other relatives and friends.
