Charles “Chuck” James Barber, age 69, of Garretson, passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2006, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, November 21, at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Garretson with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-5:00 PM Monday, November 20, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson, and will resume with the family present at 6:00 PM at the church with a Prayer Service and Rosary beginning at 7:00 PM.
Chuck was born on March 2, 1937, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Harold and Louella (O’Hara) Barber. He grew up in Parker and was baptized at St. Christina’s Catholic Church. While in Parker, Chuck participated in many sports including baseball and football. He graduated from Parker High School and continued his education at South Dakota State University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He met Jolene Johnson in Parker and the two were married on February 11, 1961, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Garretson.
Chuck taught high school Industrial Arts in Monroe, South Dakota; Cuba City, Wisconsin; Magnolia, Minnesota; Rock Rapids, Iowa; and Sac City, Iowa. Chuck and Jolene later returned to Garretson and settled on the Johnson Farm. At that time, he began working in the maintenance department at Children’s Care Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Chuck was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Garretson. He had a passion for carpentry and made many gadgets, toys, puzzles, and clocks. He was a member of the Model A Club and was a Boy Scout in his earlier years. Chuck also took great pride in the Johnson Homestead, and spent many hours working around the farm.
Charles James Barber passed away at his home on Saturday, November 18, 2006, at the age of 69.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Jolene of Garretson; children: Karen Barber (John Stickney) of Phoenix, Arizona; Mike (Donna) Barber of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Mary (Scott) Williams of Cedar Bluff, Iowa; grandchildren: Joe, Brad, Mitchell and Nichole Barber; and Maggy and Kate Williams; a brother, Fr. Hal Barber of Sioux Falls; and many other relatives and friends. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents.
