Gladys Vande Vooren, 87, of Colton died Friday, October 19, 2007 at Sanford Hospice in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am Monday, October 22, 2007 at First Reformed Church in Colton. Burial will be in the Colton Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 4-6:00 pm Sunday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Colton.
Gladys Van Engen was born February 25, 1920 to parents Herman and Margaret (Otten) Van Engen at Doon, Iowa. She grew up in Doon and attended the Doon Christian School.
Gladys married Henry Vande Vooren November 17, 1944 at Lester, Iowa. After their marriage she moved to California and worked for Douglas Aircraft during World War II. They moved to Colton in 1947, where they farmed until Henry’s death on May 7, 1980. Gladys continued to live in Colton.
Gladys was a member of the First Reformed Church in Colton for 58 years, a member of the Colton American Legion Auxiliary for 47 years, and volunteered for many years at the Union Gospel Mission.
Grateful for having shared her life are two sons, Darryl (Cary) Vande Vooren, Rapid City; Mark (Wanda) Vande Vooren, Colton; two daughters, Linda (Jerry) Hoek, Colton; Rhonda (Tom) Van Roekel, Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren; David (Amy) Vande Vooren, Wade Vande Vooren, Jeffrey Vande Vooren, Nathan (Amber) Van Roekel, Kristen (Josiah) Dunlap, Melissa (Tyler) Goff, Jennifer (Scott) Paine, Jeremy (Stacey) Hoek, Danielle (Chad) Albers, seven great grandchildren; Robert, Andrea, & Kadee Paine, BreeAnn, BayLee, & BrookLin Hoek, and Colton Albers; a brother, Marion Van Engen, Rock Valley, IA; and a sister, Josaphine Feucht, Canton; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry on May 7, 1980, a brother John Van Engen, sisters, Sade Van Engen and Tres Vander Woulde.
