Carl Johan Benson

Carl Benson 98, of Sioux Falls formerly of Crooks died Wed. Aug. 2, 2006 at Sioux Valley Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Monday, Aug. 7, 2006 at Benton Lutheran Church, rural Crooks. Burial will be in the Benton Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 3-5:00 PM Sunday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic. Carl was born December 10, 1907 on a farm north of Crooks in Lyons Township to parents Hjalmer and Christine (Johnson) Benson. He moved with his family to a farm in Benton Township where he grew up and attended the Kirkland Country School. In 1927 he got his first job as a farmhand for Rodrick Johnson and earned $60.00 a month.
Carl married Stella Holmberg March 31, 1930 in Crooks. They first moved to a farm north of Crooks and in 1933 moved a farm south of Lyons where they lived and farmed until 1961. After their retirement they moved to Sioux Falls, where he and Stella took a job taking care of a Laundromat and he delivered food and worked in the maintenance shop at Sunshine Foods until1983. Stella died January 8, 1995. Carl lived in his own home until March of 2006 when he entered the Bethany Lutheran Home. Carl died Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at Sioux Valley Hospital and USD Medical Center.
Grateful for having shared his life are a daughter, Darlene Davis and her husband Duane, Garretson; two sons, Arlen Benson and his wife Marilyn, Canby, MN; Lyle Benson, Sioux Falls; 14 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; a sister, Stella Brendtro, Crooks; two brothers, Rudy Benson, Sioux Falls; Harry Benson and his wife Louise, Crooks; and a sister in law, La Vina Benson, Dell Rapids. He was preceded in death by three brothers, an infant, Harold & Leroy and a sister Alma. Memorials may be directed to the Benton Lutheran Church or the Benton Lutheran. Cemetery.
