Eugene “Gene” Marvin Myre was born to parents Lars and Clara (Olson) Myre on March 28, 1923 at Brookings, South Dakota. He moved with his family to Sioux Falls, Dell Rapids, and finally Garretson at the age of four. He attended Garretson School, and began working for Nick Schilder at the age of sixteen.
Gene enlisted in the United States Navy on December 8, 1941. He served on sub-chasers from January 1942 until November 1945 serving as a 2nd Class Motor Machinist. After returning from the service, Gene worked for Iowa Road Builders, laying the first blacktop on Garretson Streets. He also worked at the Garretson Creamery. Gene later worked for Rollag & Beck as a mechanic, and then for Vincent Locke & Pecaut Equipment.
Gene married Lois Elaine Jastram on February 5, 1954 at Luverne, Minnesota. He started his own business, Gene’s Repair, in 1967 and continued until his retirement in 1998.
Gene was a past member of the Garretson Fire Department, having served as Assistant Fire Chief for twenty years, and Fire Chief from 1963-1964, and was a past VFW member. Gene was a current member of Zion Lutheran Church and the American Legion.
Gene passed away on Friday, March 3, 2006 at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 82.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lois, Garretson; sons and their spouses: Donald and Kathy Myre, Garretson, Gordon and Dale Myre, Kuna, Idaho, and John and Ann Myre, Sherman; a daughter-in-law, Denise (Douglas’ widow) Myre, Dell Rapids; grandchildren: Katherine (John B. III) Narigon, Joe, Tom, Ashley, Kayla, Aaron, Danielle, Amanda (Eric) Peterman; great-grandchildren: John B. Narigon IV, Isabella Narigon, Ethan Narigon, and Mia Peterman; a step-grandson, Robert DeChenne; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Douglas, five sisters, and one brother.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Monday, March 6, at Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson. Visitations will begin at 1:00 pm with the family present from 3:30-5:00 pm Sunday, March 5, at Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.
