May Rose Coburn, 86, of Garretson passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, at Sanford Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, November 14, 2009, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Garretson. Following services burial will be in the St. Rose of Lima Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 1-4:00 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson and resume at 6:00 PM at the church with a Rosary and Wake Services at 7:00 PM. Pallbearers will be Jim Coburn, Ed Clark, Tom Coburn, Phil Clark, Mitch Coburn and Michael Coburn.
The former May Rose Meehan was born May 14, 1923, in Madison, the daughter of James and Marie (Rudkin) Meehan. She grew up near Madison and attended St. Thomas Catholic School. May Rose married James Coburn on September 29, 1943, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Madison. The couple farmed outside of Madison until 1952 when they moved to Garretson. The couple bought John’s Oil Company in Garretson which is now Palisade’s Oil. May Rose worked as the bookkeeper of the company for many years.
May Rose was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the altar society and several other organizations. She enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and friends.
Survivors include her husband, James of Garretson; four children: James Jr. and his wife, Nancy of Harrisburg, Mary Clark and her husband, Dr. Ed Clark of Sioux Falls, Rosie Petersen of Sioux Falls, and Thomas and his wife, Julie of Garretson; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four sisters: Mary Beth Meehan, Bernardine Plasters, Rita Braun and Eleanore Quick and her husband David; three sisters-in-law, Margaret Dick and her husband Raymond, Joy Bloomquist and Ester Coburn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Loren Petersen; granddaughter, Maria Miller; five brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law and one niece.
