Barbara Van Zanten, 82, of Colton passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the Dougherty Hospice House.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Faith Community Church, Colton. Committal services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday at the Colton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Wednesday at the church.

Barbara was born September 8, 1935 in Lincoln County, Odessa, Washington to parents Reuben and Mary (Melcher) Heimbinger. She atended Washington Consolidated School for 12 years and graduated from Odessa High School. She worked as a telephone operator after high school in Odessa.

Barbara married J. W. Van Zanten in Christ Lutheran Church in Odessa on June 27, 1954. They moved to Colton in November 1955. She helped J. W. on the farm and loved raising her family on the farm.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children and their spouses, Brian and Penny Van Zanten, Sioux Falls; Ronald and Mari Beth Van Zanten, Sioux Falls; Terri and Randy Van Whye, Pine Island, Minnesota; Brenda and Dave Jorgenson, Colton and Tami and James Draper, Des Moines, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Heimbinger, Spokane, Washington and two sisters, Janice Wright, Spokane, Washington and Patricia (Patrick) Gies, Odessa, Washington.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. W.; grandson, Nicholas and two brothers, Dick and Vern.
