George was a United States Enlisted Air Force Officer and Korean War Veteran and was presented with the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. All his life he was fascinated with aircraft.
The joy of “Fred’s” life was watching his children and grandchildren participate in high school and college athletics. In his later years he spent a lot of time at Active Generations in Sioux Falls playing cards and pool, building relationships and enjoying good food. Fred had a ‘need for speed’ and was always a fast driver. He spent approximately ten years of his life driving race cars and in his last days was lectured for driving his mobility scooter too fast. He informed his nurse she was simply ‘no fun’.
Grateful for having shared his life are his former wife, Marian, three children, Deb Hammer, Des Moines, IA, George (Jan) Newman, Watertown, SD, and Tom (Kelly) Newman, Crooks, SD; grandchildren, Michelle (Jesse) Swanson, Des Moines, IA, Bryson (Molly) Hammer, Des Moines, IA, Vance (Jessica) Newman, Rapid City, SD, Danielle (Bill) Meyer, Watertown, SD, Keith (Lidia) Newman, Watertown, SD, Thomas (Mackenzie) Newman, Sioux Falls, SD, Krystle Newman, Sioux Falls, SD, Joseph Newman, Crooks, SD, Brock Newman, Crooks, SD; great-grandchildren, Griffin & Charlie Hammer, Des Moines, IA, Maeve, Graham, Mack and Benjamin Newman, Rapid City, SD, and Lenore Ray Meyer, Watertown, SD.
