Shirley M. Gunderson, age 89, of Baltic, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids. Memorial services will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday, February 25, 2017, at the Baltic Lutheran Church in Baltic, SD. Memorial visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.

Shirley was born on March 30, 1927, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Ole and Oline (Tidemann) Moe. She grew up on the family farm between Renner and Baltic. She attended the Thompson Country School and graduated from Baltic High School. Following her graduation she worked retail in Sioux Falls.

On June 19, 1947, Shirley married Kenneth Gunderson at West Nidaros Lutheran Church near Crooks. The couple farmed south of Baltic and raised their three children. Shirley later began working as a cook at the Baltic café until she began her 31 year career in the Baltic School cafeteria.

Shirley was a member of Baltic Lutheran Church where she was active in the women’s group. She and Kenny enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and attending Baltic School sporting events and Renner Monarch baseball games.

Survivors include her children: Susan Aldrich, Sioux Falls, Wayne (Paula) Gunderson, Baltic, and Laurie (Jim) Grotjohn, Sioux Falls; grandchildren: Kelly (Jennifer) Vietor, Hamilton, NJ, Michelle (Justin) Whitehead, Mitchell, Jamie (Jeff) Brende, Sioux Falls, Kristin (Brian) Nedved, Baltic, and Bruce Gunderson, Baltic; 6 great grandchildren, Gage, Clay, Jaxen (JJ), Oliver, Sullivan, and Jaeya; and a special friend, Dorothy Sittig, Baltic. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband Kenneth in 2006.

The family would like to thank the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center and Compassionate Care Hospice for the wonderful care Shirley received.
