Myrtle Hanson, age 107, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at the Palisade Healthcare Community in Garretson. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at the Beaver Valley Lutheran Church, rural Valley Springs, SD. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:30-7:00 PM Monday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson. Memorials may be directed to Palisade Healthcare or Beaver Valley Lutheran Church.

Myrtle Evilin Hanson, daughter of Sam and Susan (Rollag) Sorenson, was born on December 31, 1909 in Rock County, Minnesota. She attended country school #111. Her high school education was at Augustana Academy in Sioux Falls and was followed by teacher’s training at Augustana Normal School. She taught school at Roadside District #111 for two years.

On August 12, 1931, she married Vic Hanson. They farmed near Valley Springs for 14 years and during this time adopted their daughter, Donna, in 1943. In 1945 they purchased a farm south of Garretson. Vic passed away on June 21, 1986. Myrtle remained on the farm for 8 years and then moved to an apartment in Garretson. She later moved to Palisade Manor in Garretson.

Myrtle was a long-time member of Beaver Valley Lutheran Church. She was very active in teaching Sunday school, WELCA, and singing in the choir. She also enjoyed the neighborhood birthday club where she made many dear friends.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son-in-law, Kenny Gross, Garretson; granddaughter, Lori (Charlie) Holzapfel, Garretson; grandson, Mike (Mary) Gross, Garretson; great-grandson, Justin (Mandy) Holzapfel, Redwood Falls, MN; and two great-great-grandchildren, Keegan and Hadley Holzapfel; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vic; daughter, Donna Gross; parents, Sam and Susan Sorenson, two brothers, Otto and Ralph, and two sisters, Gertrude and Wilma.

The family would like to thank the staff at Palisade Healthcare for the excellent care Myrtle received.
