Betty Peterson, age 95 of Chester passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at the Aurora Brule Nursing Home, White Lake.
Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 1:30 PM at the United Methodist Church, Chester. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 PM Monday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery, Chester.
Betty was born March 26, 1921 in Bemis, South Dakota to Nels and Sylvia (Miller) Nelson. She attended school in Goodwin, South Dakota and high school in Chester, South Dakota.
Betty married Vira Julian Peterson on August 10, 1938. After their marriage they lived and farmed near Chester for most of their lives. Betty cooked for the Chester school for many years. She was famous for her beautiful wedding and birthday cakes, making them for all of her children and grandchildren and many friends and neighbors. She was an avid golfer, raised beautiful flowers and a large vegetable garden. She enjoyed watching birds, her favorite being the cardinal.
Paradise Park in McAllen, Texas was her winter home for over 30 years, where she was well known for her wonderful cooking and entertaining.
Betty always kept herself well informed on current events and politics and didn’t mind sharing her views. She loved going to her grandchildren’s sports activities.
She is survived by her children, Perry (Karen) Peterson, White Lake, SD, Susan (Joe) Aldrich, Chester, SD, and Tim Peterson, Billings, MT; seven grandchildren, Tracey (Bill) Koenig, Marion, IA; Jean (Bob) Schroeder, White Lake, SD; Mark (Lisa) Peterson, Aberdeen, SD; Kristian (Angie) Aldrich, Dakota Dunes; Lisa (Mark) Acheson, Chester, SD; Brian Peterson, San Diego, CA; and Amy (Scott) Wilson, Port Townsend, WA; twenty-three great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Vira, sisters, Rosemary “Babe” Richardson and Ava “Sis” Entringer, and her parents, Nels and Sylvia Nelson.
Betty was a strong willed, determined woman with a big heart, full of love for her family and friends.
She will live forever in our hearts.
