Roger Alan DeBates, age 66, of Sherman, died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 23, 2016, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 1:30 pm Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8:00 pm Monday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.

Roger was born on November 17, 1949 at the DeVall Hospital in Garretson to George and Opal (Fjellanger) DeBates. He grew up on a farm south of Sherman and graduated from the Garretson High School in 1968. In December of 1978, he married Linda Julius. Roger work for Buskerud (BX-CC) Construction before retiring last year

Roger loved gardening, making lefse, golfing and watching the Vikings. He was going to attend his first Vikings game this fall. But most of all, Roger loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his children: Amber Purdy and her son, Ethan of Yankton, Roger DeBates of Brookings, Christina Nelson, and her children, Mason and Tatum of Brookings, and Chad (Maria) Julius, and their children, Michael and Emily of Brookings, siblings, Don (Sandy) DeBates of Garretson, Wayne (Ilene) DeBates of Jasper, and Darlene Sheeler of Larchwood; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Opal (Fjellanger) DeBates, brother-in-law, Dean Scheeler, and a granddaughter, Anna Elizabeth Julius.
