Mary Ann Franka, age 81 of Garretson, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2016, at the Palisade Healthcare Community in Garretson. Memorial services will begin at 1:30 pm Monday, June 27, 2016, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Memorial visitation with the family present will be from 3-5pm Sunday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.

Mary Ann was born on February 12, 1935, at Valley Springs, South Dakota to Fritz & Ella (Martens) Schurman. She grew up in Garretson and graduated from the Garretson High School in 1953. On August 2, 1953, she married Clarence Virgil Franka. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Garnett, Kansas until returning to the Garretson area around 1957. After Clarence retired, they moved to their lake home at Underwood, Minnesota. In 2009 they moved to Britton, SD, where they lived for 3 years, returning once again to Garretson in 2012. Clarence passed away on December 31, 2014.

Mary Ann was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Red Hatters, and the Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson. She enjoyed attending craft shows, shopping, and fishing with Clarence.

Survivors include her sons, Greg (Barb) Franka of Garretson, Steve Franka of Garretson, and Alan (Gayle) Franka of Britton; grandchildren: Stacy (Lance) Bennett of Britton, Mike (Kirsten) Franka of El Paso, TX, and Jeremy Franka of Garretson, Jared (Hailey Goertz) Franka of Brandon, and Shane Franka, of Garretson; great-grandchildren: Tynan and Kiera Bennett of Britton, Mila Franka of El Paso, and Aryana and Jaxton Franka of Brandon; brother-in-law, Melvin (Pat) Franka of Sioux Falls, and a sister-in-law, Alice Leslie of Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Clarence, and two infant brothers.
